Mushroom Melt Hot Dogs

Show off your grilling skills with these savoury Mushroom Melt Hot Dogs. Dempster’s® Signature Sausage Buns are piled high with sautéed mushrooms and onions and topped with mozzarella for a hearty lunch or satisfying dinner. Serves four.

BBQ Hits


  • 4 Dempster’s® Signature Sausage Buns (White), split
  • 2 tbsp (30 mL) canola oil
  • ½ lb (250 g) sliced brown mushrooms
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ tsp (2 mL) each salt and pepper
  • 4 jumbo hot dogs, cooked according to package directions
  • 4 tsp (20 mL) Dijon mustard


  1. Preheat broiler.
  2. Heat oil in large skillet set over medium-high heat; cook mushrooms, onion slices and garlic for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown and tender.
  3. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Assemble hot dogs in buns with mustard, mushrooms and cheese.
  5. Transfer to foil-lined baking sheet.
  6. Broil for 2 to 3 minutes or until cheese melts.

Substitute Swiss cheese for mozzarella if preferred.
For a fancy mushroom melt, use a medley of mushrooms.
